Cameron Barclay

Cameron Barclay is a 16-year-old student leader, youth advocate, civic leader, and community servant from Buffalo, New York. Through leadership in military-style youth programs, civic engagement, public service, and national organizations, Cameron has built a record centered on service, discipline, responsibility, and creating opportunities for other young people.Cameron currently serves as the Cadet Commanding Officer of the Western New York Maritime Charter School NJROTC Battalion, where he is responsible for helping lead and oversee the development, performance, discipline, and success of the cadet corps. His progression through the battalion has included service in numerous leadership positions, including Battalion Administration Officer, Operations Officer, Platoon Commander, and Cadet Chief Petty Officer, before ultimately being selected to serve as Commanding Officer.Outside of NJROTC, Cameron has also served in leadership positions with the Civil Air Patrol, including service as a Cadet Commander, First Sergeant, Administration Chief, and Cadet Advisory Council representative. His experiences across both programs have strengthened his commitment to leadership, military professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and service before self.On the national level, Cameron serves as National Vice President of the American Youth Association, further expanding his experience in organizational leadership, communications, and youth engagement.Cameron has earned numerous awards and distinctions throughout his leadership career. Among his most prestigious recognitions are the National Sojourners Award, the Military Officers Association of America JROTC Award, and the Non Commissioned Officers Association Award. He has also received multiple additional NJROTC awards, ribbons, commendations, and leadership recognitions for his performance, character, service, and commitment to excellence.His accomplishments have also been recognized beyond his school. Cameron has received letters and formal recognition from multiple elected officials and public leaders, including Congressman Timothy Kennedy, New York State Sentor April Baskin, and New York State Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes, among others.Cameron has pursued leadership development opportunities outside of his regular school responsibilities as well. He successfully completed the Northeast Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps Leadership Academy at Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island, an intensive leadership experience designed to strengthen cadets’ abilities in leadership, teamwork, physical fitness, discipline, and military organization.In 2026, Cameron also graduated from American Legion Boys State of New York, joining the Boys State Class of 2026. The experience gave him additional exposure to government, citizenship, leadership, public policy, and the responsibilities involved in democratic institutions and public service.Cameron’s interest in government has extended into real-world public service. He previously served as an intern in the Buffalo district office of U.S. Representative Timothy Kennedy, where he gained experience and exposure to constituent services, government operations, community engagement, and the responsibilities of public office.His service is not limited to established organizations. Cameron has worked to develop initiatives intended to increase youth involvement in government and community decision-making and has explored the creation of youth advisory structures that would provide young people with a stronger voice in their communities. Cameron Has also worked with the Buffalo Common Council.He is also developing a scholarship initiative designed to provide opportunities to students and eventually grow into a broader charitable foundation focused on education, leadership development, service, and community advancement. His long-term vision centers on creating institutions and programs capable of continuing to serve others well into the future.Throughout his journey, Cameron has learned that leadership is not defined simply by rank, position, awards, or recognition. He believes that leadership is ultimately measured by the people a leader serves, the standards they uphold, the opportunities they create for others, and the impact they leave behind.As Cameron continues his education and leadership journey, he intends to remain involved in civic engagement, public service, organizational leadership, and community development while continuing to advocate for the next generation of young leaders.His approach to leadership can be summarized by the motto that has guided much of his work:“ Leadership is not defined simply by rank, position, awards, or recognition.” - Dr. Ami L Alderman
